After suffering two losses in their first two games, the Canton High School Boys ice hockey team took on two strong opponents in Barnstable and Hanover. The Bulldogs played well in both games, with a 1-1 tie against Barnstable and a 4-2 win on the road against Hanover.
Despite putting almost 60 shots on the Barnstable goalie, Canton was unable to go ahead at any point in the game. Barnstable went up 1-0 early, until Brian Middleton netted the equalizer in the second period off a Sean Connolly shot. The Bulldogs would continue to put the pressure on the Barnstable goalkeeper in both regulation and overtime, but each time the Red Hawk goalie was up to the task. Carson Eagles played well in goal for the home team, making 11 saves.
Looking for their first win of the season, the Bulldogs traveled to Bourne to take on perennial powerhouse Hanover in their last game before the holiday break. The Hawks came out flying early in the game, forcing Colin Davis to make some key saves early on. Eventually, the Bulldogs settled down and their all-senior "green line" took over in the first. Eddie Gillis would find a blocked shot and fire a wrist shot over the Hanover goalie's shoulder for the 1-0 lead. Before the end of the period, linemate AJ Thomas took a pass from Tommy Phaneuf and beat the Hanover goalie to go up 2-0.
The Bulldogs would go up 3-0 when a Jay Kelleher pass deflected off Colin Blake and found the stick of Middleton who buried the chance in front of the opponent's crease. Hanover would soon cut the lead to 3-1, and the score would remain that way until Thomas found an empty net for his second of the game.
Canton takes on Westwood in the Joe Donnelly Cup on the Wednesday after Christmas. Game time is 230pm at Ponky.
